(Reflections of light on snow)

Wie pocht' das Herz mir in der Brust
Trotz meiner jungen Wanderlust,
Wann, heimgewendet, ich erschaut
Die Schneegebirge, süss umblaut,
Das grosse stille Leuchten!

Ich atmet eilig, wie auf Raub,
Der Märkte Dunst, der Städte Staub.
Ich sah den Kampf. Was sagest du,
Mein reines Firnelicht, dazu,
Du grosses stilles Leuchten?

Nie prahlt ich mit der Heimat noch
Und liebe sie von Herzen doch!
In meinem Wesen und Gedicht
Allüberall ist Firnelicht,
Das grosse stille Leuchten.

Was kann ich für die Heimat tun,
Bevor ich geh im Grabe ruhn?
Was geb ich, das dem Tod entflieht?
Vielleicht ein Wort, vielleicht ein Lied,
Ein kleines stilles Leuchten!

FIRNELICHT

(Reflections of light on snow)

How my heart beats in my chest
Despite my youthful wanderlust,
When, returning home, I behold
The snow-capped mountains, sweetly blue,
The great, silent glow!

I breathed quickly, as if on the hunt,
The dust of the markets, the dust of the cities.
I saw the struggle. What do you say,
My pure snow light, about that,
You great, silent glow?

I never boasted about my homeland
And yet I love her from the bottom of my heart!
In my being and my poem
Snowlight is everywhere,
The great, silent glow.

What can I do for my homeland,
Before I go to rest in the grave?
What do I give that escapes death?
Perhaps a word, perhaps a song,
A small, silent glow!
